Domino’s DRU: Our Pizza Might Soon Be Delivered by Robots

Dominos DRU
We will soon be living in the era when our pizzas will be delivered by robots. Domino's DRU is one such bot and it is currently getting ready for its job.

Next time when you see a robot passing by and smelling like pizza, don’t look surprised. That little robot might be a hardworking pizza delivery bot. Domino’s has just done some recruitment for pizza delivery positions and turns out that they’ve hired some robots called DRU.

Before you think of this as an April Fool’s prank or something, let me tell you that it isn’t. Because it’s still March basically, and DRU is actually what Domino’s is planning for the future. DRU aka Domino’s Robotic Unit, is an autonomous delivery vehicle and “is set to take the world by storm,” says Domino’s.

DRU is a big step forward in the work Domino’s is doing in the future commercialization of this technology

Domino’s DRU is the first of its kind in a the space of commercial autonomous delivery. DRU has sleek, refined forms combined with a friendly persona and lighting to help customers identify and interact with it. DRU will be keeping our pizzas hot and drinks cold in its compartments.

This pizza-delivering droid is powered by technology from Australia-based Marathon Robotics and is being developed by Domino’s at its DLAB in Brisbane. Domino’s is working with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to ensure DRU local requirements for testing.

DRU is cheeky and endearing and we are confident that one day he will become an integral part of the Domino’s family.

Domino’s DRU bot is packed with on-board sensors which help him to identify and avoid obstacles along the way. DRU has built-in GPS tracking technology that syncs with Google Maps and he can select the best path of navigation from his starting point to destination.

DRU is packed with thousands of dollars worth of military robotics technology. Its compartments are locked to prevent people from jacking fresh pizza and drinks along the way. Its intended customers need to enter a mobile code to opens DRU’s storage.

Will DRU need some more protection to keep our pizza safe? Will it turn out to be a reality? Will we soon be seeing what we saw in i, ROBOT? And how will we be able to tip our cute little pizza delivery bot? Time will tell.

Oh! My last pizza slice just got cold.
